BOARD OF EDUCATION OPERATING PRINCIPLES (Working Guidelines)

1. Pursue a team building focus among the management team, District staff, site principals, teaching staff, parents, students, and community members.

a. Have Thursday evenings available for single topic workshops and first reads of upcoming agenda items.

b. Team building workshops two times a year, including Board self evaluation.

c. Develop and adopt a calendar with the Superintendent to set goals and objectives.

d. Operate in a climate of mutual trust, expecting accountability with tolerance, no surprises in closed or open session, and work toward positive staff morale with emphasis on positive reinforcement when applicable.

2. Maintain positive working relationships among Board Members and the Superintendent for the purpose of maximizing the potential of all District staff and for betterment of students. Relationship should be one of trust, teamwork, and respect for each other.

a. Suggestions made by individual Board members, which require Superintendent or staff actions requiring greater than two hours work time, should be referred to the total Board for consideration and direction at an officially constituted Board meeting.

b. The Board should embrace the "rule of three" and operate in an environment of teamwork, mutual trust, and respect, particularly in the face of hostility and conflict. After the gavel falls, all members of the management team will support the majority decision. The Board should follow Robert's Rules of Order.

c. The agenda will be set only with the approval of the Board President and the Superintendent.

d. Only promise what you can deliver, then deliver what is promised.
