Goal 1 - Literacy

Students of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District will demonstrate proficiency in literacy as defined by the California Content Standards and measured by the California SAT 9 exam and the soon to be implemented California High School Exit Examination. Progress toward meeting this goal will be ensured by the implementation of the K-12 PVPUSD Literacy Program, monitoring of student progress by district assessment systems including the ERB Writing assessment, and district performance on state assessment instruments. Performance objectives written by staff will include this goal as a focus area.

Goal 2 - Mathematics

Students of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District will demonstrate proficiency in mathematics as defined by the California Content Standards and measured by the California SAT 9 exam, the California Golden State Examination, and the soon to be implemented California High School Exit Examination. Progress toward meeting this goal will include implementation of the PVPUSD mathematics scope and sequence. Substantial progress will be made this year in meeting the state mandate that all students begin the study of Algebra in the 8th grade. Performance objectives written by staff will include this goal as a focus area.

Improve Student Access to College Preparation/College Courses

Partnerships will be forged with community colleges and/or institutions of higher learning to make advanced learning opportunities more readily accessible to PVPUSD students. Accessibility to honors, Advanced Placement, courses in the arts, and co-curricular activities will be increased in order to improve the ability of PVPUSD students to enter the college of their choice. Enrollments in the relevant courses and partnership programs will increase during the 2000 - 2001 academic year.

Develop Faculty and Staff Skills

The knowledge and expertise of the PVPUSD faculty and staff in the content areas and the area of instructional methodology will expand through the establishment of high standards and positive support systems. Emphasis will be placed on enhancing skills in serving the population of PVPUSD students with special needs. Three days of intensive staff development have been added to the work year. At least one full day of training with appropriate follow-up will address the area of special needs.

Repair and Renovate of School Facilities

The repair and renovation of all school sites will begin in the summer of 2000. All projects will be aligned with the Board approved language contained within the Measure K General Obligation Bond. An oversight committee will be appointed by the Board to ensure compliance and timely completion of projects. A report to the Board on progress and compliance will be made to the Board prior to the end of the academic year.

Develop and Implement Secondary Housing Plan

In the Fall of 2000, the Board and district staff will approve a plan to address enrollment growth at the high school level. Implementation of the plan will begin in September 2001.

Improve Communication within the District and to the Community
